Protection from Scammers

Mortgage scams these days are second only to Identity thefts and frauds. There are many people out there who make a living out of scamming people. Scammers first get hold of a victim and then they do all they can to ensure that they get your cash and identity and leave before you realize that something is wrong. These people are usually smart and will either trick you or win your trust and cheat you to get what they want. Here are a few tips you can follow to protect your identity from such scams.

  1. Take it slow: Do not jump into conversation with just anyone when dealing with finances and monetary issues. When you are making a financial deal with someone first make sure that you completely understand all the pros and cons of the deal. A slow progress is better than a sudden fall. Before you sign any important document, make sure that you have thought you decision through.
  2. Meet with your company: Most people think that all mortgaging companies want their house or their other valuables. The fact is that mortgage companies prefer to be paid than having to seize your house or car. They will try their best to make sure that you don’t lose your house. Scammers will advise you not to talk to mortgage companies but this will not bode well for you. Talk to the company and try and sort it out with them before you make any rash decisions. If you are willing to talk to them, you will end up with a better deal than you can expect.
  3. Get legal advice: Scammers hate getting their papers checked by lawyers. So, get your lawyer to check your papers and other documents before you fork them over to the concerned parties. If he or she is scamming you, then the very word ‘Lawyer’ will set them running. It is better to hire a lawyer who knows about your financial state and one who can be trusted.
  4. Take Time off before you sign: You can be sure that you are getting scammed if the person you are dealing with tries to push you for your signature. They don’t like to waste time by waiting. It is important however, that you are convinced of the legitimacy of the deal.
  5. Never ever, pay in advance: Some scammers work on advance fees paid. They may offer a good deal and expect you to pay in advance. Avoid making such mistakes.
